Middletown, RI (July 30, 2014) – Employees from BankNewport and OceanPoint Insurance Agency, Inc. (OPIA) recently presented donations totaling $1,170 to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank (RICFB) representing the proceeds raised during their casual day program wherein employees extend donations for the opportunity to dress casual on designated Fridays.

RICFB was designated to receive the casual day donations to coincide with the Bank and OPIA’s “Feed The Kids” summer food drive, which collected over 800 pounds of food in two weeks for local children and their families at-risk of hunger during the summer months.

All BankNewport and OPIA offices were collection locations for community donations of “kid friendly” food items, including breakfast cereal, granola bars, canned/bagged pasta meals, mac’n’cheese and peanut butter.

“We are enormously grateful to the employees and customers of BankNewport and OPIA for giving so generously to feed children who are struggling with hunger this summer,” says Andrew Schiff, Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “Community-based efforts like these are what make it possible for us to keep up with the consistently high need for food assistance in Rhode Island. We’re serving 63,000 people every month through our statewide network of food pantries, and a third of those are children under the age of 18. In addition to the impressive amount of food collected, BankNewport and OPIA also raised more than $1,170 through an employee dress-down day, which will enable us to provide an additional 3,500 pounds of nutritious food to families in need.”

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1982. For more than 30 years, the Food Bank has been a vital part of the state’s hunger safety net. In FY13, they distributed nearly 10 million pounds of food through their network of 178 member agencies at 223 sites statewide. The Food Bank’s primary function is to act as a food distribution center: soliciting, collecting, storing and distributing donated, purchased, surplus and salvageable food for their member agencies. Millions of pounds of food are distributed through their network of food pantries, meal sites, emergency shelters, group homes, day-care centers, youth programs and senior centers. Their member agencies are feeding more than 63,000 people each month. One in three served was a child under the age of 18.
