NEWPORT, RI (March 1, 2017) – In celebration of National Women’s History Month, the Newport County Chamber of Commerce will host a Women in Business After Hours on Thursday, March 30th, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at The Elms (367 Bellevue Avenue, Newport), sponsored by the Preservation Society of Newport County.
National Women’s History Month is observed each March, and this year’s theme honors women trailblazers in Labor and Workforce. In recognition of this theme, Pam Hyland, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England, will speak about the trailblazing histoy of the founders of Girl Scouts America and today’s growing trends for women in the workplace.
“Juliette Low, the founder of Girl Scouts of the USA, was a trailblazer whose vision has impacted over 50 million women since the organization’s inception in 1912. One of Juliette’s famous quotes is ‘the work of today is the history of tomorrow and we are its makers’. There is much we still need to do today to create a better tomorrow for girls and women and I look forward to our conversation on the 30th,” Hyland said.
Sponsored by The Preservation Society of Newport County, Blackstone Catering and Greenvale Vineyards, the Women in Business initiative was created to enrich and celebrate the talents and skills of women in business—those who manage people, those who are in a high-level individual contributor role or those who own their own business—through networking events focused on professional development and relationship building. The program was established by the Newport County Chamber to engage and empower women in business and to support women-owned businesses in Newport County and Rhode Island.
“Women’s history month is an excellent time to reflect and celebrate the growing impact women have had in the broader business community and in the workplace,” says Executive Director Erin Donovan-Boyle. “We look forward to hearing from Pam about the founders of the Girl Scouts organization in response to the needs that were percolating among girls and women at that time and how it compares to the educational and professional needs of girls and women in today’s society.”
The cost to attend this after hours event is $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Those interested in attending should RSVP by calling 401.847.1608 or visit www.newportchamber.com.
